Tottenham want to sign Aston Villa midfielder

Tottenham are reportedly interested in using an Argentina World Cup winner as a makeweight in their pursuit of highly-rated Aston Villa midfielder.

Spurs are in the market for a new central midfielder, with a ball-carrying box-to-box player seen as a priority after their struggles last season. Ange Postecoglou’s side started well last season and led the Premier League table for almost three months. But a weak squad, particularly a poor midfield, led to their struggling when James Madison and Rodrigo Bentancur were out with injuries last season.

The North London side hope to solve that problem this summer. They have identified Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey. According to Sky Sports, Tottenham have a long-term interest in the player and are working on the modalities to bring him to the club this summer.

Per the report, Spurs are exploring using Giovani Lo Celso as a sweetener in the deal. The Argentina international is close to Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, having played for the Spaniard before at two different clubs – Paris Saint-Germain and Villarreal. Lo Celso has failed to hold down a place at Tottenham since moving from Real Betis, and his return of three goals and five assists in 77 Premier League appearances means he is surplus to requirements in North London.

But he could be of some value in the transfer market and Tottenham will be glad to part with him plus some money to secure the services of Ramsey. The 23-year-old is a player Tottenham technical director Johan Lange knows very well having worked as Villa’s sporting director before joining Spurs.

However, Villa is reluctant to sell the Englishman as they have high hopes for him in the future. The 23-year-old had an injury-hit campaign last season, making 21 appearances in all competitions, with his last game coming on March 2. Yet, he remains a big part of Unai Emery’s plans for the future.

What Top Six Thinks

Tottenham’s pursuit of Jacob Ramsay makes a lot of sense as the England man ticks a lot of boxes and adding an inefficient Lo Celso is the deal is a master stroke.

However, it remains to be seen if Ramsey will be willing to trade Champions League football this season with Aston Villa for Europa League football with Tottenham. But should he agree to join Spurs, Ange Postecoglou will be getting a player who has a very high ceiling.

Though he had a muted campaign last season due to injuries, Ramsey proved his class two seasons ago, particularly under Steven Gerrard, under whom he enjoyed much success.
