Man United secure BIG deal to sell Mason Greenwood

Mason Greenwood

Manchester United have reportedly agreed to sell Mason Greenwood to Ligue 1 side Marseille for a significant sum.

Greenwood’s future has been a matter of speculation since his arrest on suspicion of rape and assault. Manchester United suspended the player in 2022 after Greater Manchester Police charged him with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm following a series of “social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.”

However, the Crown Prosecution Service has since dropped these charges, citing “a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.”

After the case was dropped, Manchester United tried to reintegrate the 22-year-old back into the first team. But a backlash from several quarters made the Red Devils decide against their initial plans.

He spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Getafe, where he enjoyed success and won the club’s player of the season. His success in Spain led to several European clubs showing interest in him, including Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Lazio.

However, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic, it is French outfit Marseille who have agreed to win the race for his signature. The club, coached by former Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi, have reportedly agreed to a £26.7m deal with United to sign the forward. Per the report, Man United will get at least £34m for Greenwood, with £23.3m to be paid upfront and a further £3.4m to come in add-ons.

The Premier League club have negotiated a significant sell-on clause into the deal, but Greenwood has not yet said yes to the move.

This could be because of the backlash that has greeted the news of his move to the French club. For example, the mayor of Marseille, Benoit Payan, has said he will speak to Marseille’s club president, Pablo Longoria, to urge him not to sign Greenwood because of his “unacceptable” actions.

What was Said

Speaking to French news outlet RMC Sport, the mayor said; “Greenwood’s behaviour is unspeakable, unacceptable.

“Hitting his partner… I saw images that deeply shocked me. Massacring his partner in this way is unworthy of a man, and I believe he cannot have a place on this team.

Payan also claimed he would ask the club not to sign Greenwood.

“I will ask the president of Olympique de Marseille not to recruit Greenwood,” he said.

“I do not want my club to be covered in the shame of someone who hits his partner. I do not want my club to be covered in the ashes of someone who hits his partner like that. It is not acceptable.

“I’m going to talk to [club president Longoria] about it and tell him. But he knows, in any case, what my convictions and my opinions are. And I’ve already told him that our history and our club is made up of people who come from different backgrounds.

What Top Six Thinks

From the moment Greenwood was caught in a web of domestic violence, it was apparent that the Englishman’s Manchester United career was over, given the amount of backlash that came from the matter.

However, the 22-year-old is gradually rebuilding his career, and his successful loan spell at Getafe shows that with the right support, he still has a lot to offer. Marseille’s new boss, Roberto de Zerbi, has promised to stand by the player if he does sign for the club. So the move, if it materialises, will be a big win for both Greenwood and Manchester United.
