Tottenham ahead of Newcastle in swoop for bargain 121-goal striker

Tottenham

Tottenham have reportedly moved ahead of Premier League rivals Newcastle in the pursuit of Ligue 1 ace Jonathan David.

The North London club are in the market for a striker this summer after failing to replace Harry Kane last season. Spurs sold Kane to Bayern Munich last summer and have since relied on Son Heung-min and Richarlison up front.

But the duo failed to produce the goods, with Son struggling for form while Richarlison struggled with fitness. Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou feels the South Korean would be more effective if he went back to his usual left-wing position, so singing a number nine is a priority for Tottenham, who are desperate to return to the top four after finishing fifth last season.

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke (via Football Insider), Tottenham’s primary target in that position is David. Although Newcastle had made enquiries for the Canadian and were believed to be in pole position to snap him up this summer, O’Rourke claims that Spurs are ahead of the Magpies and a host of other clubs who are keen on signing him.

Money won’t be a problem in the deal as Spurs can snap David up for just £25m, given that he has entered the final 12 months of his Lille contract. A transfer at that price would leave Postecoglou with enough funds to improve other areas of the pitch, too.

WHAT TOP SIX FOOTBALL THINKS

Tottenham have been linked with several strikers since selling Kane, but David looks like a fantastic solution.

The Canadian is just 24 years old, meaning that he has time to get even better and potentially make a name for himself as one of the very best strikers around. David has scored 121 goals in 266 games throughout his career and 84 goals in 183 appearances for Lille specifically.
