Manchester United target shock move for £50m Chelsea man

Man United

One season after doing business with Chelsea, Manchester United are reportedly plotting to sign another player from the Stamford Bridge.

The Red Devils are expected to be one of the busiest Premier League teams in the current transfer window as they plot an improvement from their eighth-place finish last season.

United struggled last season with the absences of first-choice left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. As a result, several players, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof, and midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, were required to provide a stopgap at left-back. The Old Trafford side even signed Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham but ended his stay in January as they felt both Shaw and Malacia were close to returning.

However, with neither player proving to be a reliable long-term left-back option due to their consistent fitness issues, United wants to sign another left-back who can also play further forward should the need arise.

According to MailOnline, Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell is on their shortlist of options. Erik ten Hag and co. signed Mason Mount last season, and per the report, they want to bring his former club and national team teammate to Old Trafford this summer.

The Englishman could be available for sale this summer as Chelsea will need to offload some players to compete in the transfer market. There is also the matter of Marc Cucurella’s form with Spain at Euro 2024, with the hairy left back likely to be Enzo Maresca’s main man in that position.

Meanwhile, Chilwell, who Chelsea signed in a £50m deal from Leicester City in 2020, is currently back for pre-season with Chelsea, having missed a place in Gareth Southgate’s travelling party.

What Top Six Thinks

It is unlikely that Manchester United will sign Chilwell this summer unless Erik ten Hag wants to multiply problems for himself at Old Trafford.

While the 27-year-old is a good left back and will be an upgrade to Malacia, his fitness record suggests that there he may be another injury-prone case for United. He started just nine Premier League games last season due to injury and may struggle to keep fit at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, apart from Chilwell, United are also looking to bloster other parts of their defence. They are already in talks to sign Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich.
