Marseille eye Arsenal forward after Mason Greenwood talks

Eddie Nketiah

French Ligue 1 side Marseille are targeting another Premier League star after agreeing to a deal to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United.

We reported this week that the French club had agreed in principle to sign United outcast Greenwood in a deal that could fetch the Old Trafford side up to £30m with add-ons.

And now, fresh reports from France claim that Marseille are willing to go for another Premier League star. According to FootMercato, Roberto De Zerbi’s side want to sign Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah this summer. The French club require a huge goal boost in attack if they are to have any chance of closing the gap on domestic giants Paris Saint-Germain. Both sides were separated by 26 points and seven places last season, so Marseille’s chance of closing that gap will require a new forward.

According to the report, the Olympians have taken the “first steps” towards signing the 25-year-old after “positive” initial contact between the club and the player. Nketiah is described as “interested” in Marseille as he looks to become a starter in another team.

What Top Six Football Thinks

Nketiah joined Arsenal as a youngster in 2015 and has played 168 times for the Gunners. But he has never been a starter for the club despite Mikel Arteta’s side lacking a true striker. The Englishman has consistently been a backup player and started only ten Premier League games last season. He was persuaded to sign a new long-term contract in 2022 and inherited the famous number 14 shirt, but he hasn’t been able to further establish himself in the two years since.

Nketiah could be inspired to move to France by the success of his former Arsenal teammate Folarin Balogun, who enjoyed a successful loan deal in Reims in 2022/23. The USMNT forward scored 21 goals in 37 Ligue 1 appearances for Reims before moving to Monaco last season for £35m.
