RB Leipzig ‘close to agreeing a season-long loan deal for Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho

RB Leipzig have reportedly agreed to sign Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho on a season-long loan.

The highly-rated 20-year-old midfielder was signed by the Reds from Fulham for £7.7 million last season after a breakthrough season with the Cottagers in the Championship.

However, Carvalho played a bit-part role for Jurgen Klopp’s side, making just 13 Premier League appearances. Despite Liverpool’s struggles, he recorded only three goals in his first at Anfield and was often missing from the matchday squad.

Despite his struggles, Liverpool and Klopp still rate him highly and are reluctant to sell him despite serious interest in his services. The Reds have rejected several offers for him and will instead send him on loan to gain experience and return next year.

And according to Italian football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, RB Leipzig have won the race for his signature. Romano said the German Bundesliga side will complete a loan deal for Carvalho next week. The deal will not include an ‘option to buy’ as Liverpool expects the Portuguese youngster to return a better player next year.

Meanwhile, Leipzig were not the only ones interested in Carvalho. Vincent Kompany’s newly promoted Burnley side were also keen on the 20-year-old, but it now looks as though they will be beaten to his signature.

Leipzig enjoyed a solid domestic season in 2022/3, finishing third in the Bundesliga. But they are rebuilding this summer, having lost their top scorer Christopher Nkunku following his move to Chelsea. While Carvalho lacks the Frenchman’s experience or goal-scoring record, he could be a good squad option for Marco Rose’s side.
