Newcastle open talks with AC Milan over Sandro Tonali

Newcastle United have opened talks with AC Milan over the signing of Italy international midfielder Sandro Tonali.

The Magpies are keen on adding a creative midfielder to their ranks this summer, with Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella and Leicester City star James Maddison also on the radar.

But Inter want £70million for Barella while Leicester are looking to sell Maddison, who has been leaning towards a move to Tottenham for £60million.

As such, Eddie Howe’s side have turned their attention to Italy international Tonali, who they expect to get for less. According to a report by The Athletic, Newcastle are expected to present an opening bid of £42million (€50million) for Tonali.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is open to moving Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes further up the pitch if Tonali arrives. The 23-year-old, who has 14 senior caps for Italy, is set to feature for his country at the Under-21 European Championship.

Tonali joined AC Milan on loan in 2020 and made the deal permanent a year later. He has made 130 appearances for the San Siro club and won the Serie A title with them in the 2021-22 season.

Liverpool were initially linked with the midfielder, but the Reds have turned their attention to other targets, allowing Newcastle a free run to his signature.

Meanwhile, the Magpies entered talks with Inter over the signing of Nicolo Barella but stressed that it could be a ‘difficult’ deal. Leicester City’s James Maddison has just a year left on his contract at the King Power Stadium, which means the Foxes will likely sell him this summer. However, Tottenham are currently favourites to sign him.
